O'Brien Denies Bowden Story

From the DDN:

That, though, isn't what some folks in Washington say is the obstacle. They say that obstacle is a refusal by Reds General Manager Dan O'Brien to return Bowden's phone calls or e-mails.

It's the second time this season that charge has surfaced, the first time in the Dayton Daily News and again Thursday in The Washington Post. O'Brien flatly denies it.

Said The Washington Post report, "Don't look for Eric Milton to wind up in Washington by the July 31 trade deadline. A club source reiterated yesterday that the Reds won't return Bowden's calls and that they aren't going to do anything to help Jim win."

O'Brien is in Billings, Mont., with the club's Pioneer Rookie League team and laughed aloud when the report was read to him.

"I've probably not talked to Jim in about 10 days," he said. "I explained to him at that time that our manager, Jerry Narron, and the coaches asked me for 10 days to two weeks to get a handle on our personnel. He said he would get back to me then."

O'Brien paused and laughed again before saying, "I got an e-mail from Jim Bowden today giving me his new e-mail address."

O'Brien said not much is active on the trade front anywhere right now, "But I expect appreciable activity to pick up during the All-Star Game."

My opinion of O'Brien would change quite a bit if he could get rid of Milton.  For anything.  Anything at all.

The next month should be quite interesting in Reds Land.  And then football starts, so we've got that to look forward to at least.  And the offseason.  Maybe some more trades ... or something.

I wonder what it's like to root for a team that goes to the playoffs?  It's been six - ten years, I can't really remember.

complete games
Nevermind the playoffs.  I can't remember the last time we had a starting pitcher who was remotely a threat to throw a complete game.  It must be nice...

playoffs
Lets start smaller tah that, if Adam Dunn ever  hits a sac fly then we may start to improve until that time come, like ive siad before, this team will never win.

where've you been?
Dunn's sac fly has come and gone, so you need a new theory.

Billings?
What the hell is he doing in Montana two weeks before the trading deadline? Don't they pay scouts to scout low-level prospects?

Billings?
Great fishing, beautiful mountains, a place to lay back and contemplate.

stand pat
Unless someone makes you a Godfather offer, don't do it. Stand pat and build for next year. I was a big fan of dealing this season but we can not make any deals and "win" them right now. I really think this team is close to being in the hunt and Challenging St Louis. Hopefully DanO can pull the trigger on the right kind of deal (ala Joe Morgan, a very good player who became great and put the Reds over the top) this off season. And do not trade with St Louis/Chicago/Houston. Or pitchforks, tar & feathers and the like will be coming your way

When you say "stand pat"
You mean, of course, to not trade any major building blocks, such as Dunn, Griffey, Kearns, Pena, Lopez, Claussen or Harang, right?  (Keep Freel, too, I guess?)

No matter what, Randa should be dealt before the deadline, and hopefully, the Bad Man also.  I'd not want to help Chicago, Houston or St. Louis by trading Randa to them, and the most logical trading partner would actually be Minnesota.  I would love to foist the Bad Man on an unsuspecting Chicago, Houston or St. Louis.

Mercker should stay, because he has a two-year contract with a home-town discount.  The jury is still out on Eric Millstone.

exactly
Keep the main cogs. It may require a trade like Lee May and Tommy Helms for Joe Morgan and Geronimo to put them over the top but first we need to acquire good, solid starters. Call DanO and tell him to look at 1969-1971. There are a lot of comparisons between the two eras. It seems simple to me. he has the blue print in front of him he just needs to look at it.

Randa
I think it would even be okay to send Joe to Houston (Chicago and St. Louis have no need to trade for Randa).  What are we afraid of?  He's a free agent anyway, so it should not matter as long as we get someone good in return.

super joe
But to the Astros for who?

Randa
The Astros already have Ensberg at third and Berkman is playing first base.  Where would Randa play?
